Eagle Wing Tours is Canada's 1st Carbon Neutral and 1% For the Planet Eco Adventure Whale Watching Tour Operator, located at Victoria's historic floating village Fisherman's Wharf. After Green Tourism was recommended to Eagle Wing, they realized that the program's sustainable objectives aligned with their own, and decided it would be a good fit to help them maintain their role as sustainable business leaders.

Challenge

Eagle Wing Tours was known as a leader in sustainability in Victoria prior to applying for accreditation with Green Tourism Canada, but wanted to continue making improvements and obtaining accreditation to keep that title. Their challenge is to remain the #1 visitor requested whale watching company in Victoria and to retain their leadership in sustainable tourism.

Solution

Along with becoming Canada’s first Carbon Neutral and 1% for the Planet Whale Watching Tour Operator, receiving Gold certification from Green Tourism Canada puts Eagle Wing Tours above their competition in the eyes of the industry and their visitors. After reviewing the Green Tourism Canada criteria, owners Brett and Don knew that achieving Gold would be a challenge, but it was what they were striving for.

Results

“The industry and visitors have started recognizing the various symbols of success when it come to sustainability and over the past 2-3 years many of our clients have commented on the fact that they book with Eagle Wing because of our sustainability stance and because of the organizations we support and belong to. Reaching the top level of Green Tourism in Canada is certainly one of those icons.  Each year Green Tourism Canada management reviews the guidelines for becoming and maintaining our Gold certification and it helps us ensure that we are doing everything we can to stay at the top. Eagle Wing Tours has been the #1 rated whale watching activity in Victoria since 2007 and showing what we do, how we do it and to what level we strive to remain at the top is gaining more notoriety with visitors each year.” – Brett Soberg, Lead Captain and Co-owner

Moving forward, Eagle Wing will continue to grow and promote aboriginal tourism as part of their programs as well as finding sustainably produced clothing for their staff. They will also focus on ensuring their office is as energy efficient and sustainable as possible.
